In commemoration of Human Rights Day, which falls every December 10, SCORP CIMSA FK YARSI held a webinar about intellectual disabilities to provide education and information about educational quality and educational guarantees for parents who have children with intellectual disabilities. This is important because low public awareness about disabilities is closely related to the discrimination they experience in their daily lives. Especially in terms of education, the percentage of children with disabilities aged 7 to 17 years has difficulty getting a proper education.
Moreover, the wider community still underestimates equality in education for persons with disabilities. Despite that, every child deserves equal access to education regardless of their status and family background. It must be accessible and based on non-violence and available to every child. They should be encouraged to pursue the highest possible education (UNICEF).
In response to the above, it is necessary to approach and educate their family starting from the smallest scope, family. With the hope, their family will fully support their children who have an intellectual disability to take a proper and equal education with other children as their right and reduce stigma against children with intellectual disabilities.
To realize that, SCORP CIMSA FK YARSI held a project called STRODE: Seizing Bright Future for Intellectual Disabilities by a webinar with the intellectual disability’s parents as our targets. This project is expected to enlarge and improve their understanding of the rights and educational equality of children with intellectual disabilities and improve their knowledge of managing their children’s emotions while studying.
