[ERASE: Dare To Act and Report Sexual Harassment]

The Annual Records of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) record cases of violence against women received by various community institutions and government institutions spread across almost all provinces in Indonesia. (CATAHU, 2020 Komnas Perempuan).

The year 2020 showed that the highest cases were in DKI Jakarta (2,461 cases), followed by West Java (1,011 cases) and then East Java (687 cases). Cases in DKI Jakarta have increased from the previous year by 2,222 points. Komnas Perempuan sees that the high number is related to the number of service provider institutions (FPL) in the province and the quality and documentation capacity of the institution.

As a state party to the convention, Indonesia has ratified many laws and regulations that guarantee and protect women’s rights. This year, Komnas Perempuan added the legal instruments used in the litigation process and the obstacles encountered in their implementation to determine how effective the applicable laws and regulations are.

  1. Child Protection Act
  2. Law on the Elimination of Domestic Violence
  3. The Criminal Code
  4. Marriage Law
  5. Information and Technology Law

Based on this background, SCORA and SCORP CIMSA FK YARSI will collaborate on an event that talks about sexual violence incidents in Indonesia, namely ERASE: Dare To Act and Report Sexual Harassment. In addition to commemorating International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, this topic was chosen because the prevalence of violence against women in Indonesia is still relatively high.

ERASE was held on March 26, 2022, in a zoom meeting platform with three speakers. The speakers is from Kementerian Pemberdayaan Perempuan dan Perlindungan Anak RI (KemenPPPA), Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Asosiasi Perempuan Indonesia untuk Keadilan (LBH APIK) Jakarta, and HIMPSI (Himpunan Psikologi Indonesia).

Dra. Valentina Giting, M. Si delivered material about sexual harassment and the reporting processes. Nathania Theora, S. Psi provided material on legal aid for women who have experienced injustice, violence, and various forms of discrimination. Moreover,  the last speaker was Dr. Naomi Soetikno, M. Pd., Psi conveyed the psychological side of the victim of sexual harassment. Nurfatimah Aprillianda hosted this webinar as a moderator who was a Local Officer On Human Rights and Peace 2018/2019.

Besides the webinar, we also had a podcast about sexual harassment by discussing two topics: Verbal Harassment and Forced Marriage, with a speaker Aulia Izzah Azmi from the Women March Malang. The podcast was broadcasted the day before the event, on March 24, 2022,

After the event, we hope that SCORA and SCORP CIMSA FK YARSI and the community can increase their knowledge and awareness about these issues. We hope that the high prevalence of sexual harassment in Indonesia does not continue in the future.
